Goals

Use JUnit Maven BOM for version alignment
Add minimal dependencies for JUnit5 Java Projekt

Setup

Excerpt from the Maven project’s pom.xml:

<dependencyManagement>
  <dependencies>
    <dependency>
      <groupId>org.junit</groupId>
      <artifactId>junit-bom</artifactId>
      <version>5.7.1</version>
      <type>pom</type>
      <scope>import</scope>
    </dependency>

</dependencies>

JUnit5 does not work with older versions of the Maven Compiler Plugin and the Surefire Plugin used for test execution. Setting their versions in the pom.xml is done like this:

Sometimes I need to resolve Maven dependencies programmatically. Eclipse Aether is a library for working with artifact repositories and I’ll be using it in the following example to read dependency trees from a given POM descriptor file and download each dependency from a remote Maven repository to a local directory.

Dependencies

We’re adding a bunch of dependencies to our project’s pom.xml:

<properties>
    <aetherVersion>1.1.0</aetherVersion>
    <mavenVersion>3.2.1</mavenVersion>

Extract Coordinates from the POM

Helpful for build and integration environments, pipelines etc.

Exctract the Project version from the pom.xml

mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-help-plugin:3.1.0:evaluate -Dexpression=project.version -q -DforceStdout

Override a Property via local configuration

e.g. to override the property xxx from your project’s pom.xml

Create a directory .mvn in your project directory root
Create a file named maven.config in this directory
Insert -Dxxx=newvalue into the file to override this property

Don’t forget to add .mvn to your .gitignore!
